Righto guys, the time has come for [glow=red,2,300]The Splinter[/glow].
For those who don't know what it's about it's basically a team comp run with Fioretto fencing club (which is about 5mins away from us). Each club has three teams (one for each weapon) of three to four people. All three weapons are fought and the overall winner gets [glow=red,2,300]The Splinter[/glow] (which is literally a big splintered piece of wood that has been painted and made up as a trophy)
Fioretto won the Splinter last year (they beat us in sabre and foil - and in foil only by one point!) and we kicked their ass in Epee. I'm entertaining strong hopes that we have a better chance of winning the Splinter back this year though!
I've spoken to Brooke (senior Fioretto fencer dude) who has tentatively suggested two dates - Thursday the 25th of August and Thursday the 1st of September. We were thinking of holding one at Monash and one at Fioretto. Do those dates suit people?
Obviously we want the best teams that we can possibly have so if enough people are interested in competing for [glow=red,2,300]The Splinter[/glow] then we could run an intraclub comp to see who gets to be on the teams!
It's going to be heaps of fun (with the added incentive of seeing if we can kick Fioretto's ass) so I hope you all get involved!

A tournament is a good idea. But I'd like to also base it on previous challenge cup results, as well as the general knowledge of, um, errrr, myself...... Just so that if Liam has a bad night, he can still fence Epee for us, that type of thing Oh, and I thought the arrangement was that both nights would be held at Monash, since it was Fioretto last year... that's what I thought Brook was thinking anyhow. But, as long as we win it back, it doesn't matter where we do it ;D

So I take it Splinter doens't have a novice division or something... that's dissapointing But On another matter I find the advertiseing for "LARP" weapons on the google banner even more dissapointing... and somewaht disturbing and creepy... but maybe that's just me...

The tournament will be held on the dates that Tam said it will be held above And yeah, no novice component to this one. Strongest teams (1 female if poss), two wins out of the three weapons in team comp wins the splinter. Last year, we got caned in sabre, kicked their asses in epee, and came back from about 8 points down in the last bout to lose foil 44-45. (BLAHHH! WHY DID I FLECHE???!?!?!!)

It depends on:
a) if you get selected for the foil team, and
b) which night the foil is on

The first leg of the Splinter is complete! Liam, Miranda and myself fenced tonight, winning the Epee 45-39. It was a close bout, we stayed in front by a couple of points right up until the end. Thanks to Ben for presiding for us. Next week (Thurs), we'll be heading over to Fioretto to finish things off! We only need to win one of the Foil or Sabre to take the trophy! Last year it went down to the wire, they won by a single point - 45-44 in the foil, after we were down 40-35! But, a lot can happen in a year Teams are as follows: Sabre: Steve, Ben, Tam Foil: Steve, Alex, <to be decided> If you're around next week, come over and support us ;D

Yes! ;D We one the epee fairly easily last week (can't remember the actual score), then last night won the foil. It was an edge-of-your-seat event, with us sitting in front most of the event, leading 35-40 coming into the last bout. Fioretto slowly made up the points, finally running down the time at 42 all. We went into overtime, and with a beautifully lucky hit, Steve won it for us. They were just too good for us in sabre, winning 45-30.
